Even cases involving murderers are not heard daily – Mahama slams High Court

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani, has criticised the High Court’s decision to hear the case involving James Gyakye Quayson daily.

According to him, this time around, suspects on trial in court control the outcome and repercussions, describing it as a culture of travesty of justice.

He said that the court has allowed politics to infiltrate its job rather than delivering fair justice.

The High Court ordered that Mr. Quayson’s perjury and forgery trial commence every day on Tuesday, June 20, 2023.

The court denied Quayson’s lawyer’s request to postpone the trial until after the Assin North by-election on June 27, 2023, in which he is running.

The Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, claimed that given the charges filed against Quayson, he might be convicted and imprisoned if found guilty, highlighting the importance of a speedy trial.

However, Mr. Mahama, speaking to party supporters and constituents in Assin North, indicated that the court had failed to be fair to the candidate who had done nothing wrong.

He asked why NAM 1, who is on trial for allegedly scamming people, does not appear in court daily.

He maintained that the Quayson case will be remembered as one of the most blatant abuses of Ghana’s legal system in history.

“Our court is now political.” It has turned political because, when we filed our candidature to run, the case launched against Gyakye Quayson would be heard daily. But the question is, do we hear criminal instances daily? Is NAM 1, who is in court for allegedly scamming people, having his case heard on a regular basis? What has Gyakye Quayson done? Is he a murderer? What has he done? Is he a thief? What kind of intimidation is this?

What we want to tell them is that we will send a bed to court and our candidate will sleep there. Whatever they do, we have resolved to vote for Gyakye Quayson. They can hear the case in the morning, midday, and evening; if he is not present, we will still vote for him.”
