The Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, has been granted leave to miss the next adjourned date by an Accra High Court.
The former Assin North MP’s perjury trial is currently proceeding on a day-by-day basis in the run-up to the constituency’s by-election on Tuesday, June 27.
Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, dismissed reports that the government is attempting to prevent Mr Gyakye Quayson, the National Democratic Congress parliamentary candidate, from running in the Assin North by-election.
According to him, the allegations are baseless because just as Mr. Qyason has the right to run in the election, the court has the authority to hear pending cases.
“It is not about him not being allowed to contest the elections. He has the right to contest, and the state also has the right to hear cases pending in court,” he said.
