Ghanaian gospel musician Aya, formerly known as Perpetual Didier, claims that changing her stage name to Aya has given her more visibility than her previous stage name.
The musician disclosed on the mid-morning show on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that Aya is her real name, and her new manager Dave Joy advised her to use it since it was artistic.
She explained to host Sokoohemaa Kukuaa that the name change was to bring her closer to her fans because the name was easy to remember.
She mentioned that the name Perpetual Didier was difficult for some fans to associate with and that at one point, some people thought she was related to Didier Drogba, a professional footballer.
”Some were unfamiliar with the name Perpetual Didier and had difficulty recalling it. I was discouraged at times as well. I went through a lot, especially after my brother died. Then I met Dave Joy, and after I introduced myself, he described the name Aya as artistic, which prompted the name change.
”All I want is to be closer to my fans… Aya’s name has increased my visibility. It has also gained international acclaim. I am pleased with the outcome of the name change.”
Aya recently announced the release of her latest single, Edenkema, which was recorded by Dave Joy and produced by Lucci Money.
Edenkema is a Nzema word that translates literally as “Creator.” In the song, Aya thanks God for the gift of life, which she believes outweighs all others.
She explained that she chose to sing about life because we should be thankful to God for what we have.
