Ambrose Dery, the Minister in Charge of Interior, has denied that the government had a reason to remove Dr. George Akuffo Dampare as Inspector General of Police ahead to the 2024 general elections.
He was replying to a leaked audio in which a senior police official stated that the IGP should be replaced because he would not back the government’s rigging tactics in 2024.
The officer argued that maintaining the IGP in office will thwart the government’s rigging efforts with the help of the police.
However, the Minister has denied these allegations, claiming that the government has no plans to rig the 2024 general elections.
He insisted that there is no such conspiracy against the Inspector General of Police and emphasised the significance of maintaining the independence and integrity of the police throughout the election.
“Tapes will be useful if they relate to a crime, but otherwise No. But I haven’t made that determination whether this is criminal or not. Let me make it absolutely clear that this government is not going to tamper with the 2024 elections. The president does not want to stay one more hour beyond his term. We also want to make sure that we have a free and fair election,” he said.
