The Narcotics Control Commission Amendment Bill 2023 has been passed by Parliament.
The Bill was passed after the House had made significant changes to the cultivation of cannabis for industrial and medicinal purposes.
The Minister of Interior would now have the authority to issue licenses for the cultivation of cannabis.
This will also enable the utilization of this plant for various beneficial applications.
The bill was amended and passed after the Supreme Court invalidated provisions within the Narcotic Control Commission Act that permitted the cultivation of specific types of cannabis for medicinal and industrial purposes.
It was the view of the court that the provisions contravened Article 106 of the 1992 Constitution.
The Attorney-General later appealed the decision by the apex court dismissed the review application in a narrow 5-4 decision.
The passage of the bill facilitates the growth of this industry and opens avenues for further exploration of its potential.
