Residents of Nsawam Adoagyiri ( Piadekye Electoral Area) are concerned about the health risks posed by the area’s public toilet facility.
According to the residents, the stench from the public toilet was making breathing difficult.
They told Rainbow Radio’s Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi that the situation worsens when it rains or in the afternoon.
Several of them complained that the toilet is unkempt and infested with worms and flies.
They claim that they are forced to remove their dresses and shirts in order to prevent the bad odour from getting stuck in them.
Others complained that they couldn’t sit outside to relax or eat and had to eat in their rooms.
A resident told the reporter that the area is infested with flies and that flies have taken over their dry lines.
”The toilet is in a bad state. We complained to the Assembly member, but nothing has been done about it. When you call him, he does not answer. The stench from the toilet endangers our health. Because of the stench, we are unable to leave our rooms for fresh air. We can’t eat outside when we’re cooking, so we have to eat inside. The flies are wreaking havoc on the dry lines.”
”Some of the women get infections from using the toilet facility,” said another. Several of us have stopped using it”.
Some have also turned the area into a dump, increasing the risk of a Cholera outbreak.
Achievers Montessori School is also in the area, and the school’s administrators are concerned that the situation will endanger the children who attend the school.
Meanwhile, the facility’s manager, Samuel Onuatey Osabutey, accused residents of open defecation.
He claimed that he sometimes arrived at work to find human excreta all over the place and had to clean it up.
According to him, he uses disinfectants to clean the space, and the residents’ claims were not entirely accurate.
