The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and MP for the Bekwai Joseph Osei-Owusu, says leaders in the House have lost control of their members.
He said the leadership on both sides has lost control of the House, and their leaders have left the work in the chambers to the back bench.
He stressed this equal number in parliament has brought the worst in MPs, I have repeated it, I will repeat it again – this parliament, the eighth parliament has made the least number of laws.”
“Young people are in control; they look at things differently from the rest of us, so it is even good for them when their leaders agree to do it.
“Check the current parliament, it is always people from the back bench who come to raise this thing and not the leaders. What it means is that at this time in the parliament of Ghana, leaders don’t have control, the back bench has control,” he said.
He stated categorically that Ghana’s 8th Parliament has become the worst in the country’s history.
He added that the current parliament’s performance in terms of timeliness and the number of members required for parliamentary work remained the worst.
Speaking to the media after the House adjourned owing to a lack of quorum to conduct government business, he urged Ghanaians to give the majority side a larger number in the next parliament rather than an equal number to each party.
The MP stated that he believed cooperation in the house would be achieved because both sides had equal numbers.
He noted that by making this remark, he had proven himself wrong.
Minority members have boycotted sittings four times in solidarity with their colleagues Janes Gyakye Quayson and Minority Leader Ato Forson, who are being prosecuted for different infractions.
Majority supporters have joined Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign trips.
“This parliament, the 8th parliament, has made the least number of laws. We have not cooperated as we did in the past. In my fifteen years in parliament, there was not one time that we had fewer than 30 people in the chamber. But we have cooperated over the years because we understand the challenges.
