Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, has claimed that the speculations about Cecilia Dapaah’s stolen money will continue for a long time until the investigations into the subject are completed.
According to the lawmaker, people are guessing and making various arguments about money and how it was generated because of the personality involved.
He added that some claimed the money was stolen from funeral offerings, while others claimed it belonged to her relatives.
Others he mentioned have also told Ghanaians that the money could be from bribes the minister received from dealings at her ministry, and until the case is thoroughly probed, these rumours would continue.
In a volley of questioning, the MP demanded to know whether the stolen funds came from funeral donations, belonged to her relatives, or were generated by her personal enterprises or her ministerial income.
He also stated that the speculations will not go away because we were in this country when a deputy minister only dreamed of making a million dollars, which sparked several public outbursts in which some people in government called for a lifestyle audit to be conducted into the deputy minister’s life, leading to her dismissal.
The Cecilia Dapaah affair, he noted, is a true situation in which over a million dollars have been stolen, and the same people who called for the then-deputy minister’s lifestyle audit find nothing wrong with it.
“If you look at her ministry and the kind of resources allocated to her to do work on behalf of the public, all of these are speculations. Until we get to the bottom of this, these speculations will never go away.
The speculations will also not go away because we live in a politically overt country where, in the past, a deputy minister dreamed of earning a million dollars, leading to some serious public commentary by people who are in government today. They called for her dismissal and a lifestyle audit. So if today the actual sum of one million dollars and more have been stolen,” then it raises fundamental questions, especially when these same people see nothing wrong with what has happened.
He further noted that the problem has devolved into a saga that has captivated public attention and all kinds of narratives because of who Cecilia Dapaah is.
He stated that the former minister should have known better because she was a prominent figure, and that the topic will cause public outrage.
He said the former minister should have put the money in the bank rather than his private apartment.
What kept her from transferring the funds to the bank?
Some assume that she did not send it to the bank since the money was not acquired in a way that could be explained to the bank.
He also indicated that Ghanaians are furious because of the current economic situation and that the people are sceptical of the propriety of public workers and whether or not these public servants are utilising our resources for the public good.
