Fati Ali, an aspiring presidential candidate in the Students Representative Council election at the University of Media, Arts, and Communication (UNIMAC-GIJ), says it is difficult for a female to be elected in our tertiary institutions, even if they are equally competent and diligent.
She stated that the situation is not limited to voting in an election, but that breaking stereotypes is a major issue.
The aspirant argued that campaigning in an election as a female student is difficult because you must convince the student body to vote for you while also explaining why you deserve the position as a female candidate.
She was speaking with Kwabena Agyapong on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm’s Frontline.

She told the host that the election victory of the first female SRC President at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) inspires her.
Yvonne Osei Adobea was declared the winner of the SRC presidential elections at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on July 26, 2023.
This made her the first female to lead KNUST’s Student Representative Council in its 71-year history.

In response, Fati Ali praised her for taking that risk and emerging victorious and making history.
It is difficult and doubly so to run for office as a woman. While campaigning, you should try to convince people that you are more than just a woman and that they should vote for you. So it hasn’t been easy, but when I saw Yvonne win, I thought to myself, at least someone has done it. That has been accomplished. It means that my hopes and dreams are valid, and I can achieve them as well”.
Fati Ali is campaigning on ‘the transformation agenda and impactful leadership.
She intends to launch the SRC house cleaning policy to ensure the review and adoption of the drafted constitution and also educate students on the constitution to empower them to demand accountability.

She wants to use her leadership as SRC President as the yardstick advocate for the increase of SRC dues, leveraging on the brand equity of UNIMAC-SRC to fund a 5-year development plan with GIL and NAFTI (infirminary, a bus, and a hostel).
