One of the candidates who contested in the Superdelegates conference of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Poku, has called for the immediate dismissal of the North-East Regional Minister.
The energy expert says if the minister fails to resign from his post, President Akufo-Addo must sack him.
His reason for calling for the dismissal of the minister is that he failed at his job of ensuring safety and security during the election.
He made the remarks during an interview with Kwabena Agyapong on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM.
He was worried over the assault on the agent of Alan Kyerematen and that of Kennedy Agyapong.
He first praised the election committee for organising the election, saying, ”they had done well, but out of the 16 regions, 15 were well organised.” The process was hampered by only one region. That is the region of the North East. The issue should be addressed by the party. This was an internal exercise, and it is unfortunate that the regional minister and regional chairman were present while someone was assaulted. We have asked the party to handle the situation.
However, I have proposed to the President that the North East Regional Minister be fired. What happened in the region while he was in charge is unacceptably bad. The party has established ground rules. The rules prohibited people from displaying their ballots, but when the election began, some people broke the rules, and Alan’s agent protested and was assaulted. We saw the video and witnessed what occurred. While this was going on, the Police officers stood by and watched.”
He told host Kwabena Agyapong that he had to order his agents to leave the centre when the incident occurred because he didn’t want them in danger.
He also questioned how all of the votes cast could have gone to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
He stated that this is not something that should be ignored; the party must address the issue immediately, and ”the regional minister” must resign.
”The President should allow the Regional Minister to resign because it is unacceptable that our own party members could be beaten in front of everyone under your supervision. Nobody attempted to help the person who had been assaulted. It was bad.”
