Political analyst Boakye Yiadom reports that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is reportedly seeking presidential primary candidates to step down, with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia being declared the party’s presidential candidate.
The lecturer shared the information on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, stating that this information was gathered from credible sources.
He did, however, add that Kennedy Agyapong is the only candidate who has refused the party’s request and has called for the presidential primary to be held as scheduled.
He was responding to the decision by Alan Kyerematen to withdraw from the November 4, 2023, primary.
He suggested that there could have been several underlying factors that influenced the former Trade and Industry Minister’s decision to withdraw from the race.
”My investigation and the information I have gathered have revealed that some senior members of the party are engaging with some candidates and advising them to withdraw from the race so that they will not run on November 4th. Kennedy Agyapong, on the other hand, has refused to withdraw and has asked the party to hold the primary on November 4 as planned.
”Kennedy Agyapong, from what I’ve heard, has affirmed his decision to give the party a showdown, as he promised,” he added. I’m not sure about the other candidates, but Kennedy appears to be willing to go all in and compete in the primary.”
Mr. Boakye Yiadom also advised the NPP to manage the situation in order to avoid any negative consequences.
He stated that if Alan decides to run as an independent candidate, it will hurt the NPP’s chances in 2024, emphasising the importance of crisis management.
