The Member of Parliament for Builsa South has once again criticised the Electoral Commission for sticking to its decision to limit the registration exercise to its district offices.
The MP stated that various persons and groups have encouraged the EC to broaden the registration process and not confine it to their district offices.
He said that limiting the centres to their offices would prevent many eligible people from enrolling during the exercise.
Dr. Apaak stated that CSOs, chiefs, and other powerful people have all asked the EC to do the right thing.
However, the EC, led by Jean Mensah, has refused to accept the good advice.
The Electoral Commission has announced that the voters’ registration exercise for individuals who have reached the age of 18 will commence on Tuesday, September 12 to Monday, October 2, 2023.
It said the exercise will be conducted at all 268 district offices across the nation.
The Commission made this known at a press briefing in Accra dubbed, ‘Let the Citizen Know’ in August this year.
Addressing journalists, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, said, “The voter’s registration exercise will afford Ghanaians who have attained the age of 18 years, since the last registration of 2020 and others who are more than 18 years, but for various reasons couldn’t register during the 2020 registration exercise.
“The EC will embark on voter registration in all 268 district offices of the Commission. The exercise will be held from September 12 to October 2.”
The MP questioned the EC chair about who she thought she was working for and insisted that she work in the best interests of the people.
“Chiefs; CSOs; Religious Groups; Persons with Disabilities; and Political Parties, Leaders, and MPs have all called on the EC to decentralise the registration exercise to ensure that citizens are not disenfranchised. Yet the EC remains adamant. Who does Jean Mensa think she works for?”
