Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, the paramount chief of the Mampong Traditional Council, has cautioned the government not to succumb to international pressure to legalise same-sex activities in Ghana.
Speaking at the 32nd Christof Heyns African Human Rights Moot Court competition in Kumasi, Asanteman’s second-in-command stated that Parliament should ensure that the anti-LGBTQ+ bill is passed to protect the country’s culture.
He told the MPs that if the measure criminalising LGBTQI+ activity is not passed, traditional leaders will deal harshly with parliamentarians.
Such practices, according to the traditional ruler, are immoral and contrary to Ghanaians’ morals and traditions.
He said it makes no sense for us to throw away the culture we have inherited over the years in the name of acquiring degrees in European universities like the ones we have established here.
“Because I have acquired degrees in European universities like those here, we should throw away our culture we’ve inherited from time immemorial before the white man came over because of dollars.
He stressed that we cannot permit a man to kiss his fellow man or a woman to do the same in the name of human rights.
He commended Uganda for being bold in passing its anti-LGBTQI+ law and slammed those who have condemned it.
He charged Ghanaian MPs to follow that example and vote in support of the bill.
“For heaven’s sake, those saying Uganda must be ostracised just because they were bold to have passed a bill into law; Ghana has ours in parliament, and low betide those parliamentarians, if they emulate what is happening in America, they will come and meet us in our respective kingdoms.”
