We are deeply concerned about the situation in Wundua, a community located in the East Mamprusi Municipality (Nalerigu-Gambaga Constituency) of the North East Region of Ghana. The community has been suffering from the repercussions of inadequate road infrastructure for far too long. The Vice President Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia the then running mate to candidate Akufo Addo (H.E. President Akufo Addo) promised to fix the deplorable road linking Langbinsi-Wundua if the NPP wins during the election campaign period of 2016, but nothing has been done so far.
The road has become a hotspot for armed robbery activities in the municipality, yesterday (1st October, 2023), a young man who is believed to be in his late 30s from Chirifoyiri a suburb of Wundua was killed, increasing the number of lives lost from 2019 to 2023 to two. Meanwhile, over twenty other victims have been left with permanent disabilities, the amount of money and valuable items such as motor bikes/tricycles lost due to the poor road conditions and robbery activities are just enormous.
It’s also disheartening to note that the North East Regional Minister deceived the community with a so-called contractor to start work on the road on 15th May 2022 at a community durbar, but nothing came out of it. Our checks have revealed that no news articles or reports were found regarding the Wundua road construction project by Mawums Limited or any other contractor as he the Regional Minister claimed about the award of the contract.
We call on the government to take immediate action to address this issue and fulfill its promise to the Wundua community. The government must prioritize the safety and well-being of its citizens by ensuring that they have access to safe and reliable transportation. We urge the government to allocate funds for the construction of this road as soon as possible.
We also call on the government to take measures to improve security in the area. The rise in armed robbery activities is a serious concern, and we urge the government to take swift action to address this issue. We believe that increased police presence and patrols in the area will help deter criminal activities and ensure the safety of residents.
We urge the Municipal Security Committee to as matter of urgency show commitment in dealing with the insecurity situation of the road to salvage the plight of the people of Wundua and the road users as whole.
We stand with the Wundua community during this difficult time and will continue to monitor this situation closely. We hope that our collective efforts will help bring about positive change for this community.
We hope that the government will take swift action to address this issue and provide a safe and reliable road infrastructure for the people of Wundua. We stand with you in solidarity during this difficult time.
