Agona Swedru Market traders are angry at police officers, the Agona West Assembly Taskforce, and the MCE for evicting them without warning.
The traders claim they are being evicted to make room for a private developer to start a project.
On Tuesday, October 10, 2023, the traders mounted a protest to show their dissatisfaction.
The Agona West NPP Constituency executives joined the women in a protest against MCE Onoma Addison Colman.
In an interview with Rainbow Radio’s Oheneba Ademah, the traders alleged that they were not prepared to move out of the market.
Among other things, the traders lamented that they had nowhere to relocate; hence, they called on authorities to intervene.
They also complained of the poor sanitation situation in the market and the lack of a toilet facility.
“Growing up, this market has been where we have traded. We have sold in this market to care for our children and families. We are not thieves or armed robbers, but Onoma brought in the police to intimidate us. Is he asking us to go and steal to survive? There are armed robbers on our roads tormenting people, but the police have come to us and intimidated us”, a market woman said.
Another trader said, “Onoma has asked us to move out because of the project by a private developer. They promised to relocate us to a facility. But they have failed to do so. We are not prepared to move out of this place today or tomorrow. They have provided no tangible reasons for us to move out of the market.”
Meanwhile, Agona West NPP Constituency Organiser David Essando, popularly known as Sam Toye, is demanding answers on why the traders are being ejected.
He also indicated that the traders are now attending to nature’s call for polythene bags because the only toilet facility in the community is full.
