Dr. Clement Apaak, Member of Parliament for Builsa South, has slammed the administration once more over the shutdown of the renal section at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
Despite a Ministry of Health directive, the Korle Bu Renal Dialysis Unit remains closed to outpatients.
The facility’s management has asked that some precautions be taken before reopening.
The dialysis unit was closed in May 2023 due to a delay in the delivery of some supplies and an outstanding GH4 million cedis debt.
Following the closure of the facility, about 19 deaths have been recorded as a result of patients’ inability to receive dialysis therapy at private clinics, which is more expensive than the care provided at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
In response to the matter, the MP questioned why the government would find money for frivolous expenditures but not for releasing funds to pay the unit’s debt.
He stated that several people require access to the facility, but its closure has hampered their care.
He believes it is unacceptable for Ghanaians suffering from renal failure to go through what they are going through when the only way to solve the problem is for the government to provide the funds needed to pay the debt.
“The renal unit is still closed to Ghanaians in need of dialysis five days after the promise and announcement of reopening it. The USELESS and corrupt NADAA/DMB gov’t can find monies for needless expenses, but can’t find 4M to pay a debt to keep citizens in need of dialysis live?”
Just last week, Dr. Apaak took a swipe at the government saying it was only a useless administration that will invest significant resources in building a cathedral while a kidney unit at its flagship public hospital stays closed due to debt.
He described the government as wicked considering what he described as the taste of the president to travel in luxurious jets when we are faced with serious challenges.
He said what makes the situation more annoying is that in the face of these challenges, some appointees of the government are keeping several millions of dollars in their homes.
“A gov’t can get BOG to print billions, spend millions on a cathedral, spend millions to fly a Prez in luxury jets, and whose appointees have millions of dollars/cedis in rooms can’t fund a 4M debt for a renal unit to reopen to save lives of dialysis patients? USELESS and wicked!”
