A police officer and five people are in critical condition after being shot during the shootout.

The injured are being treated at Nkwanta St. Joseph Catholic Hospital.

The fights are alleged to have been sparked by a Yam Festival organised by the Akyode tribe in the town of Nkwanta.

A few weeks ago, several properties were set ablaze, a situation that made several residents in the area flee.

Meanwhile, police and military personnel have been sent to keep calm and protect civilians.
