A very colourful farmers’ day celebration was held at Kukpalgu in the Zabzugu district of the northern region, with a call by the DCE for Zabzugu Alhaji Ahmed Iddrisu Abubakari Adakwa to implore residents to desist from indiscriminate bush burning.
He explained that the act does not only destroy agricultural products by using high-tension electricity poles, but also burdens the district assembly with extra costs to replace the burned electricity poles.

Despite the numerous awareness campaigns created by the Environmental Protection Agency and Forestry Commission on bushfire prevention among communities that are cultivating food crops, there appears to be no appreciation of the efforts of the organisations in question by beneficiary communities in trying to accomplish the goals of nature conservation and climate change mitigation, specifically in the case of the rural districts in the Northern region.
Alhaji Ahmed announced that “the district bushfire prevention volunteers group was inaugurated a fortnight ago to deal with issues and indiscriminate bushfires.” He said.
Meanwhile, the District Director of Agriculture, madam Bridget Pawa, lauded the farmers in the area for their contributions towards ensuring food security in the Zabzugu district, the Northern Region, and Ghana as a whole.
This year’s farmer’s day celebration is the 39th, and it is in honour of the farmers and fishermen nationwide.
The government declared Farmers’ Day today, Friday, December 1, a national holiday, and the celebration is on the theme, “Delivering Smart Solutions for Sustainable Food Security and Resilience.
Against this background, the DCE advised farmers to be environmentally cautious and practice sound agricultural practices to ensure environmental safety and sustainability and boost agriculture productivity in the district.

“What we must also do is take care of the trees planted under the government’s Green Ghana Project to replenish the flock of trees that have been destroyed in the past by either bushfires or illegal logging.” He explained.
However, the Zabzugu district best farmer of the year 2023 went to Wajabul Gmabari.
