Rent Control Ghana has responded to questions on whether it is compulsory for tenants to gift their land lords or land lady’s during the Christmas festive celebration.
Some tenants over the years have lamented about how they were evicted from their rooms or their rents were increased exponentially because they didn’t gift their land lords or land lady’s during Christmas.
Emmanuel Kporsu, the Public Relations Office for Rent Control Ghana, spoke on this issue in an interview with Rainbow Radio Accra and advised tenants on what to do should they find themselves in such situations.
“Is it not by force to gift any landlord or landlady during Christmas, and there is no law that permits anybody to be evicted from their room because they didn’t give out gifts? You can only be evicted lawfully if you have not paid or renewed your rent.”
“It is even against the law for landlords to attach conditions to the stay of any tenant after they have already settled their rent fee. So if you are a tenant and something like this happens, you should report such a case to the law,” Emmanuel Kporsu said on Rainbow Radio Accra.
