A fire has destroyed more than 70 stores at the Race Course Market in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.
The outbreak started around 7 a.m. on Monday, December 18, 2023.
The fire outbreak occurred just a week after another outbreak destroyed numerous shops in the Kumasi Central Market’s French Line sector.
The outbreak on Monday destroyed metal container businesses selling local spices, cowhide, and used apparel.
The Ghana Fire Service responded with four fire engines to help prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent stores.
Several of the affected traders are counting their losses and have called on authorities to extend a hand in assisting them.
Information gathered indicates that a fire broke out in a shop where a trader was boiling water for a bath for her child.
Ashanti Regional Commander of Ghana Fire Service, ACFO Henry Giwah, raised safety concerns in the market due to some traders using stoves and gas cylinders for cooking.
An investigation has been initiated into the fire outbreak.
