The Majority in Parliament has expressed his opposition to what he has described as an attack on the President by the Speaker, Alban Bagbin, over the decision by the President not to assent to the witchcraft bill and some other private member’s bill.
He described it as unfortunate and slammed the Speaker for doing that.
Speaker Alban Bagbin took a swipe at the president over the reason he provided for not assenting to the bills.
The President, in a letter to Parliament, explained that his decision to decline assent to the Criminal Offences Amendment Bill and the Ghana Armed Forces Amendment Bill sponsored by the Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu, was because it could have a financial impact on the state’s consolidated fund and violate Article 108 of the constitution.
But the Speaker disagreed, saying the President was ill-informed by the Attorney General.
However, the majority leader felt the position taken by the speaker was an insult to the president.
“If the Speaker disagrees with him, it is legitimate, and he could have ended at that. I disagree with the opinion of the president. Then maybe I also come up with my understanding of the law. But we all saw and heard the rather visceral language of the speaker.”
“I thought it was most unfortunate. The Speaker, after reading it, goes on his own frolic and attacks the president, and I felt it was most unfortunate.”
