You have to approach the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with self-belief and a “can-do” spirit, President Akufo-Addo has told the Ghana’s senior national football team, the Black Stars.
He was optimistic the team will be able to bring home the coveted trophy, which has eluded Ghana for over four decades.
He made the remarks at the farewell dinner organised at the team’s camp in Kumasi
President Akufo-Addo, accompanied by key officials including Youth and Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif, Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei Mensah, and Hon. Seth Adjei Baah, Board Chairman of the Ghana Tourism Authority.
The Black Stars’ pre-tournament preparations in Kumasi ended with a goalless draw against Namibia on January 8. Ghana, in Group B with Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique, begins their AFCON journey on January 14 against Cape Verde.
Minister Ussif, on his part, urged the team to remain focused and dedicated as they have what it takes to end Ivory Coast’s AFCON trophy drought.
The Black Stars will leave Accra on January 10 for Abidjan, where they will finalise their preparations for the vital opening match against Cape Verde on Sunday.
