Two people have died from the collapse of a mining pit at a galamsey site.

The two perons have been identified as Mr. Bismarck Adjei and Madam Abena Kyeiwaa at Wasa Princiso Ataase in the Amenfi East Constituency of the Western Region.

The Assembly member for the Wasa Nkonya Electoral Area, Mr. Opoku, confirmed the incident on Nysnkonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM.

According to him, the area is known for illegal mining.

He said the illegal miners were working when the pit collapsed on them, leading to the deaths of the two.

He revealed that several others managed to escape, but the two could not.

He said that after the incident, the Police were informed, and a rescue team was dispatched.

After four hours, the team managed to rescue the two, who unfortunately died and have been sent to the Wasa Akropong Government Hospital mortuary.

The Assemblyman added that the woman had gone to the illegal mining site with her daughter, who managed to escape the incident.

He expressed outrage, saying “the government has failed the galamsey fight due to political reasons”.

He noted that “although the president put his presidency on the line in the fine against illegal mining, he has failed woefully at addressing the challenge”.

He was clear that the reason galamsey has not been handled is because NPP members are involved in illicit activities.

He was concerned that galamsey had devastated the ecology across the country, despite the assurance given by the president to deal with it.

“The pledge by the president to fight Galamsey was just political talk, and the president does not have the political will to fight it,” he added.

He concluded that the government is also not interested in dealing with galamsey for fear of losing the 2024 general elections.
