Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), lawyer Obiri Boahen, has dismissed claims that the exit of 18 experienced NPP MPs and some NDC MPs will negatively impact parliament.
He deems such claims unfounded, baseless, and lacking in merit.
Lawyer Boahen said, “There is no basis in what they are saying.”.
Using himself as an example, he said, he had instructed a lawyer who had practised just for three years to appear before the Supreme Court and yet managed to wow the judges.
He said some have been lawyers for 10 to 20 years and have not been to the Supreme Court before.
“So what this means is that a junior or a senior can both perform well. We should not create the impression that staying in parliament for long means you automatically become wise or competent.
“We have several MPs in the House who have been there for years and yet are not performing or making any meaningful contributions to the House. Someone like the sticker on the side of the NPP and Okudjeto Abalakwa are very vocal and MPs perform well although they have not been in the house for long. Kyei-Mensah and Haruna Iddrisu have been in the house for a long time and are exceptionally good. Others are also new and are doing great.
So we should not create the impression that you can only perform better when you have been in the house for a longer period. Let us stop this needless argument and these needless assertions.
He added that we will always have a situation where new entrants come to parliament and the experienced ones leave. But that should not be interpreted to mean the House would be badly affected.
If 18 MPs in the NPP are no longer contesting, it does not mean the NPP will collapse. If the longest-serving MPs want to leave, they can leave; we will have new faces and MPs who will perform well and even better than those who will leave.”
