Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has said that his decision not to contest again as a legislator was because he has served to his abilities and feels it is time for him to quit the house.
The MP, who is also the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, says he has risen through the ranks in the House and even gone beyond serving in Ghana’s parliament.
Quoting 2 Timothy 4:7-8, the MP said, just like Apostle Paul, “I have fought the good fight; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”.
According to him, he has served not only Ghana’s parliament but also ECOWAS, the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, and the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
Speaking in an interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, he told host Kwabena Agyapong that “I have also worked extensively in Ghana and the African Parliaments in fighting against corruption”.
He was responding to the reason why he had decided to leave the house, considering his years of experience.
“I have served the NPP from the constituency level, and I have served the party in the Ashanti region. I have served the party in Ghana. I have served in the Parliament of Ghana. I have served the government of Ghana.
I have served the African Parliament in the fight against corruption. I have served the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. I have been an executive member of the African Region for about 15 years. I have also served as the Vice Chairman of the Commonwealth Parliament. At the global level, we have various parliaments from all the countries forming the Inter-Parliamentary Union headquarters in Geneva with four working committees. I have served as chairman for one of the committees for two separate terms (2 years each).
And so I have served Ghana’s parliament, the ECOWAS parliament, the Commonwealth Inter-Parliamentary Union, and the Commonwealth Parliament. So I have done my best. I have put to good use the skills, wisdom, knowledge, competencies, and abilities God granted me. I strongly believe Ghana will benefit from my service. I will no longer be in Parliament, but I will not stop working for the party.”
He also assured that he would continue to offer his skills and knowledge towards the growth of parliament.
He offered to also assist the new entrants who would get elected.
He stressed the need to do that willingly as part of his efforts to share his knowledge with those who would need it.
