The Kumasi Traditional Council has urged the public to stop discussing alleged derogatory remarks made by Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako against Asantehene Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II.
The directive was given after the Ashanti regional chairman appeared before the Council on Monday, January 29, 2024.
The Council went ahead to admonish Wontumi and other political party leaders to be cautious in their public statements and avoid involving the chieftaincy institution in their political affairs.
Bantamahene, Baffour Owusu Amankwatia VI who presided over the council in his caution said: “Be mindful of your utterances; people are watching you. We don’t want anyone to discuss this issue again. Everyone should cease fire”.
The Council reprimanded Chief Nana Kwaku Duah for engaging in partisan politics, despite Ghana’s Constitution prohibiting such behavior.
“We are here for all parties. From now onwards, Nana Kokosuhene must desist from party politics if he wants to maintain his stool. You are very sad that you brought this issue upon yourself,” the Bantamahene said.
The Council allowed NPP Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako and Chief Nana Kwaku Duah to testify.
In his testimony, Wontumi denied the allegations, but the Chief of Kokosu defended his complaints and requested witnesses.
Divisional Chiefs deliberated on the matter, with some blaming the Chief for meddling in politics and others suggesting he should choose between being a chief and a politician.
Some chiefs rebuked Chairman Wontumi for pronouncing curses on the Chief and his family.
Others also took the position that there was no way Wontumi would against the Asantehene.
The Bantamahene, who is the President of the Kumasi Traditional Council, after hearing testomines from both parties advised the Chief of Kokosu not to meddle in partisan politics.
He went ahead to caution Chairman Wontumi to be mindful of his public utterances.
The Traditional Council has instructed Chairman Wontumi to perform rituals to reverse a curse he imposed on the Chief and his family.
Chairman Wontumi was accompanied by the Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei Mensah, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister Asamoah Boateng, Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, National Chairman of the NPP Stephen Ntim, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, NPP National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye, NPP National Treasurer Dr. Charles Dwamena, and other NPP regional executives.
