Vice President and presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawunia, has touted Ghana’s medical drone system as the largest in the world.
He said the introduction of medical drone services has been effective and has provided health facilities in remote Ghana with access to emergency supplies.
He made the remarks when he delivered his vision for Ghana if elected as president of the Republic of Ghana.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, previously, hospitals and clinics in remote and largely rural communities like Nyangbo Sroe in Afajato South, Afram Plains, Yagaba or Yunyoo had difficulty getting medical supplies, especially in times of emergencies involving, for example, snake bites, child-birth, blood loss, floods, etc. Many lives are needlessly lost because the hospitals are unable to access critically needed supplies on time. To address this problem, Ghana opted to partner with Zipline, the world’s largest automated on-demand delivery service for medical supplies.”
He revealed that there are six Zipline Distribution Centres (DC) in Omenako (Eastern Region), Mpanya (Ashanti Region), Vobsi
(North East Region), Sefwi Wiawso (Western North Region), Kete Krachi (Oti Region) and Anum (Eastern Region).
Zipline has made millions of deliveries of medicines, blood and vaccines to very remote parts of Ghana and has saved many lives. Zipline services are available 24 hours a day!
I should add that Ghana currently has the largest medical drone delivery service in the world! What is even more impressive is that the drone centres are 100% manned by young talented Ghanaians,” he said.
The drones make national-scale on-demand deliveries of 12 routine and emergency vaccines as well as 148 blood products and essential medicines.
The $12.5 million contract was initiated to enable the Ghana Health Service to fly blood and other essential medical supplies to deprived and hard-to-reach areas.
