Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II claims to have reclaimed Ashanti’s spirit and soul after receiving artefacts from Kumasi 150 years ago at Manhyia Palace.
He was reacting to the return of seven golden artefacts looted from Kumasi in 1874 on their way to the Fowler Museum in California, United States.
The traditional ruler and other chiefs at a durbar at the Manhyia Palace received the artefacts and also celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Sagrenti War, which took place in 1874.
The activities also coincided with the commemoration of the 25 years of the ascendency of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, onto the Golden Stool.
Professor Kwasi Ampene from Tufts University in Massachusetts, United States, successfully facilitated the return of the artefacts.
The artefacts include Asipim chairs made of silver, Sika Amena, necklaces, armbands, and anklets—all made of pure gold.
They were being returned from the Fowler
Museum at the University of California, United States.
Another group of items is due from the British Museum in April of this year.
They would also be displayed outside on May 12, 2024, during the Akwasidae Festival celebrations.
