President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has accepted responsibility for the economic crisis that is affecting the country.
He said that although he works with the Vice President and other appointees, executive powers are ultimately vested in the hands of the president.
He argued that his vice president and cabinet ministers can only advise the president on what to do, but the ultimate decision rests with him.
On February 27, 2024, the leader acknowledged his role in the nation’s challenges in his address to Parliament.
He was responding to claims by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia that he was only a ‘driver’s mate’ and hence cannot be blamed for the challenges confronting the country.
The Vice President had opined that the Economic Management Team (EMT), which he chairs, lacks decision-making powers and serves solely in an advisory capacity to the cabinet.
The presidential candidate of the NPP had said that the EMT provides counsel but doesn’t wield decision-making authority.
The president affirmed what his vice president said, stressing that it would be unwise for any leader to refuse to listen to advice; however, the bucks stop with him.
