Moses Foh-Amoaning, Executive Secretary of the National Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values, believes it is completely false to claim that jailing homosexuals will exacerbate their situation.
According to him, it makes no logical sense for anyone to say that when gays are jailed, they will continue to have sex in prison since our prisons are known for such activities.
In his view, such an argument is flawed and disgraceful.
He was responding to the attempt by Majority Leader Alexender Afenyo-Markin to propose an amendment to replace the custodial sentencing regime in the anti-gay bill with community service.
Lawyer Amoaning accused the Majority Leader of an attempt to delay the passage of the bill.
He made the remarks while speaking in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM.
He refuted claims that gays would be thrown into jail if the bill were approved by the president.
He clarified that advocates and sponsors of LGBTQI+ activities are the ones who would go to jail, adding that persons who practice the act may escape jail if they show remorse and agree to counselling and treatment.
He said our prisons are supposed to reform people, and so it makes no sense for an MP to be engaging in such propaganda.
“These are unfounded claims. But let us even assume that this is true. Is it not a disgrace to say that people will continue to have anal sex in our prisons if they are jailed? It is the function of our prison service to make sure that they reform people. If you travel abroad, you will discover that sexual offenders are separated from other prisoners. So what is Afenyo talking about?
You are an MP, and you know that people are engaging in anal sex in our prisons, and instead of you focusing on that and addressing the issue, you are rather engaging in propaganda. Let me ask this question: if you are proposing community service for the offenders, are these people not living in the community? Would they not continue engaging in the act if they were asked to do community service?
So what is Afenyo talking about? It is not true. What we have to ensure is that even in our prisons, we uphold proper international standards by separating sex offenders from other inmates. It is not true that if the offenders are jailed, they will keep having sex. That is totally rubbish, and we have to ignore that.”
