Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, has asserted that President Akufo-Addo and his Vice, Dr. Bawumia, support the activities of the LGBTQI+.
This comment from the lawmaker comes after President Akufo-Addo said he was awaiting the outcome of a Supreme Court case before he would assent to the bill.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said on Monday, March 4, 2024, that he will await the Supreme Court’s ruling before making a decision on the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ Bill recently passed by Parliament.
He made the remarks following a challenge against the bill filed by a lawyer at the apex court.
Speaking at the New Year greetings event with members of the Diplomatic Corps at Peduase, President Akufo-Addo said Ghana remains committed to upholding its human rights record.
Reacting to this, Dr. Apaak alleged that the President is using this as a conduit to initiate legal action to prevent him from signing the bill into law.
He was emphatic that the president was not prepared to sign the bill, and that was why he used the legal action as an excuse.
He also referenced an opinion expressed by lawyer Sammy Gyamfi, the communication officer of the NDC, over the matter.
The lawyer had questioned how President Akufo-Addo could refer to the suit in his speech yesterday when the same was filed only today.

Dr. Apaak maintained that the legal challenge before the Supreme Court is an NPP-sponsored suit, calculated to serve as a convenient excuse for the President to refuse to assent to the bill.
“It’s now clear that President Akufo-Addo, his vice, Dr. Bawumia and their part, NPP support LGBTQI+ activities. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t be using a conduit to initiate legal action in the Supreme Court to give the President an excuse not to sign the bill passed by Parliament into law.”
