A group calling itself Bawumia Must Win has slammed Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen over comments that Ghanaians should vote for a Christian because Ghana is a Christian country.
The General Secretary of the group, Sir Obama, said the statement by the former Trade and Industry Minister was false because the former minister peddled an “obvious untruth.”
He said Ghana is a secular state and not only dominated by Christians.
The Constitution, he noted, has given room for all other forms of religious groups to thrive.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, he said that per our status as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution, Ghana is a secular state.
“And so, if someone or anybody creates the impression that Ghana is a Christian country, that is erroneous, that is misleading, and that is inaccurate, and so we need to set the record straight that Ghana is a secular state and every religion is allowed to practice here.
When you say a country is a Christian country, that means no other religion is allowed to be practiced there aside from Christianity. Therefore, if Alan made such comments, he erred, and he is preaching religious supremacy. He is preaching supremacy for Christians to feel superior and see themselves as the only people required to lead.”
He said the aspiring presidential candidate made comments that have the tendency to destabilise the peace and stability of their country.
He referenced Kuduna in Nigeria, where there is instability due to the conflicts between Christians and Muslims.
He said such reckless comments could affect the development of Ghana.
Sir Obama advised him to retract, apologise, and concentrate on campaigning for reassuring Ghanaians that he could win their vote for him.
He should concentrate on his message that can make Ghanaians vote for him instead of making such reckless comments.
“We all know he was referring to the Vice President. The Vice President is a Muslim, and so he is making these claims against him. You were at the party and decided to leave. Nobody forced you out, yet at any given opportunity, you decide to take a swipe at Bawumia. It is not fair.
Bawumia has demonstrated leadership, and Ghanaians have decided to vote for him. Alan should not invite Christians against each other. He should not make such comments again. This is not the Alan we know. He should thread caustiously and avoid making such irresponsible comments,” he added.
