Founder and Leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Akwasi Addai Odike, has likened the politics of Ghana to ‘Gulivers Tavels’.
He said Ghanaians have allowed politicians, particularly the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to set the country in motion and destroy every aspect of our economic, social, cultural, and religious lives.
”The saddest part is that those who should know better, especially those who claim to be well educated, are rather deepening the unhealthy political system in Ghana,” he argued.
He made the remarks while speaking via Zoom in an interview on Rainbow Radio 92.4 FM, UK.
He told host Dr. Ren that the partisan politics in Ghana have destroyed every sector of our lives.
”Today, we have pastors, chiefs, police, and army officers who are either NDC or NPP. In the health sector, we have NDC doctors and NPP doctors. Teachers are not different. This kind of stupidity cannot help us transform Ghana. Transforming the country is a collective approach, but because the NDC and NPP have failed us and destroyed the transformation of this country, we do not appreciate the collective interest.”
He posited that these political parties are not adhering to the principles of democracy.
”We are acting contrary to democratic principles, but due to partisanship and multiparty democracy, and because someone prescribed these things to us and we accepted them, we have failed to conduct any retrospection. As a result, Politics in Ghana is based on greed, selfishness, corruption, and the create-loot-and-share model. Our political leaders from the NDC and NPP have failed us. They deceive the people for power and only come in to amass wealth. They have no justification for going to the people and asking for another mandate. To secure votes, they are now moving from churches to events, festivals, and public functions.
He stated that the other challenge was that ”we refused to find common ground and look at where we went wrong and make amends, and as a result, we have created domestic colonisers in which political parties hold the entire country ransom. Those in power want this to remain unchanged because it allows them to accumulate wealth and become wealthy through political office. They have improvised the people, and when they return with a small sum of money, the people are easily deceived”.
He was responding to political rallies held in Kwahu by the two major parties during the Easter celebration.
He believes that the government should focus on repairing deplorable roads and investing in infrastructure to boost local tourism, providing value for money for both foreigners and locals visiting the area.
