Kwesi Addai Odike, the leader of the United Progressive Party, argues that the West-borrowed democracy has not effectively served Ghana.
He stated that we failed to acknowledge the distinct cultures and traditions that differed from our own.
”That is what we failed to learn. We thought that because the whites succeeded with their system of governance, we were equally going to succeed by adopting what they had. That is not how it works. Their environment, culture, tradition, and mindset are different from ours.
The problem we have as a nation is the module of governance that we were influenced to use in Ghana. It has divided our front, made us lawless, and led to indiscipline, a culture of impunity, and partisan politics. Politics has eaten into us to the point that if you ask a kid out, she would want to know the political party you are associated with.”
Speaking to Dr. Ren on Rainbow Radio 92.4 FM, UK, he said we have politicised every institution to the point that if you don’t belong to a party, you will be deprived of opportunities.
He bemoaned the politicisation of our security agencies and its implications for national security, stability, growth, and justice.
”This is pure nonsense and dangerous. Until we get gallant men who will come together and declare that we can no longer continue like this and chart a new path, there is nothing we can do.”
He attributed the challenge to what he described as the excessive powers we have given to the executive arm of government.
”Number two, partisan democracy cannot work on any African soil. We need a union government. We need a government that will bring all of us together, integrate us, and select the best managers to manage this country. We also need a meritocracy system of governance”.
