The Ghana Meteorological Agency has predicted that for the 2024 rainfall season, we will witness normal to late onset, mostly late to normal cessation.
Chief Forecaster Raphael Osei Boakye explained that we will witness some heavy rainfalls between April and June, but the volume will be below what we witnessed in the previous year.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, we will continue to experience the high temperature until the rains start, and by May, the temperatures will reduce.
He explained that the rainy season between April and May requires heat energy, hence the reason why there is a rise in the temperature.
He stated that we will experience normal to below-normal rainfall for most places in the country; however, some areas in the middle portions of the transition areas of the country will experience below-normal rainfall.
“It is expected that the rainfall pattern for this period will be very short compared to the previous year. We will have a late onset before the rains start, and it will also be short. That is why we advise farmers doing rainfall agriculture to focus on farm produce that takes less time to harvest so it does not impact them negatively.
Let me also stress that the fact that the rains will be shorter this period does not mean we will not experience heavy downpours. We will witness heavy downpours, but they will be relatively shorter.”
He admonished the various stakeholders to help better minimise risks and maximise the opportunities that exist in the season.
He added that some areas in the southeastern parts of the country, especially the coastal and inland areas, will experience normal to above-normal rainfall.
For the northern zone, he disclosed that they will start experiencing heavy downpours by August, following which those in the southern zone will drastically reduce.
