A 16-year-old Junior High School student from Assin Fosu died tragically after drowning in an abandoned quarry hole filled with water in Site, a neighbourhood of Assin Dompim at the Assin Fosu Municipality.
The student has been identified as Nicholas Nyame.
The pit serves as a swimming pool for local children and a place for some parents to wash their clothes on weekends.
Mr. Nyame, the father of the deceased, reported that his son went to school on April 10, 2024, but couldn’t return home.
A search party was formed following a complaint to the police, but efforts were unsuccessful, and the individual was found dead in an abandoned pit in the afternoon.
The father suspects foul play, believing that his son may have been killed and thrown in the pit.
Jeffrey Nyame, the deceased’s brother, expressed surprise at the distance the deceased traveled from their current location to swim.
The individual, who left home in uniform, was found with a boxer shot and injuries to his jaw and mouth, suggesting foul play.
Meanwhile, others believe the deceased had his head struck underwater rock after jumping into it causing injuries to his jaw and mouth.
Residents in the area are urging authorities to fence or cover a pit to prevent children from swimming due to the sharp edges of rocks filled with water.
Police in Assin Fosu have retrieved the body and sent it to St. Francis Xavier Hospital for preservation, awaiting further action.
