The Ghana Union of Traders (GUTA) has refuted claims that it has not consistently criticized the Akufo-Addo-led administration despite the country’s economic crisis.
GUTA noted that such an assertion cannot be the true representation of the facts.
The National Welfare Officer, Ben Yeboah, speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, said that just as they were critical of former President John Dramani Mahama, they remained consistent in criticising this government over the economic crisis.
He was responding to a question on whether it was true that GUTA has been patient with the NPP over the energy situation despite their hostility against former President John Dramani Mahama.
He disagreed, stating that they have been consistent in their criticism of this administration over the challenges confronting us.
He said that under the era of Mr. Mahama, they were vocal about the various challenges that confronted the country and have done the same under this government.
He explained that, as a union, they weigh the situation before they act in order to not appear political when raising issues affecting the business community in the country.
He recounted how they had to criticise the former NDC government when the country was plunged into a dumsor and other economic crises between 2013 and 2015 but had to ensure in 2016 in order not to appear as pushing the government out of power.
He also told the host, Kwabena Agyapong, that they have held several press conferences and other activities to express their displeasure over the economic crisis confronting Ghanaiansunder the NPP, but people have suddenly forgotten about their efforts.
“We weigh and examine all forms of issues because if you don’t take care, people will misconstrue our activities as political. Between 2014 and 2015, we spoke a lot about the challenges that confronted the country, including the one facing the economy. We had to tone down in 2016, so it would not sound like we wanted the government out. We endured 2016, but we were very critical of their government from 2013 to 2015.
The same way we have been critical of this government. We have held several press conferences and released several press releases on various economic issues. But Ghanaians are pretending we have not been critical of this government on a lot of issues. We have closed down our shops. We raised several issues last year, and yet people have forgotten. We do not want people to have the perception that we want to push the government out.”
