Founder of the United Front Party (UFP), Akwasi Addai Odike, says partisan politics is retrogressing Ghana.
He posited that our current module of governance, which is a blend of the UK and USA systems of governance, is not good for any African country, including Ghana.
He said there is no African country that has progressed by practicing this system of government.
He argued that we have to believe in ourselves and develop a new system that will help our country develop.
“Everything is pointing backward. The country is retrogressing. This partisan democracy is not good for any African country. There is no African country whose attempt to practice this democracy has succeeded. We don’t believe in ourselves to develop a module of government that will help us develop. We don’t believe in ourselves as Africans. We have adopted the system developed by foreigners.
Our system is a blend of the UK and the USA. The Americans don’t have chiefs in their states. They practice a federal system of government, and there is a vast difference between our military and theirs. For the UK, their constitution is full of conventions, and they change government without any election. And so the structures, their mode of government, and how they implement their policies are different from ours, and yet, our leaders have since 1992 adopted this system and are not willing to change. This system makes our leaders domestic colonisers.”
The businessman speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM said anytime we vote for people, they take the country to a ransom due to the structure of the constitution because it places too much power in the hands of the president.
He underscored the need for a review of our constitution to limit the powers of the president.
“I want to appeal to Ghanaians to you for a constitutional review of the union government I have proposed. If we fail to do this, we will continue to retrogress as a country. Partisan politics has delayed our process, and we need to take steps to address these challenges.
We need to slash more of the powers of the president because democracy is mass government. But what we are practicing is government for the few, by the few, and the few benefit, and that is not the characteristic of democracy. We need to, as a matter of urgency, listen to people who are championing change in our module of government and leadership.”
