The Greater Accra Regional Minister designate, Titus Glover, has expressed outrage at the continuous encroachment of the Tema and Sakumo Ramsar sites.
The minister-designate is wondering if people could encroach on the Sakumo and Tema Ramsar sites and build along wetlands.
The minister-designate said he was disappointed that the encroaches went ahead to complete their projects, although former Minister Henry Quartey had instructed them to stop.
He called for an urgent step in addressing the issue to preserve our ecological treasures.
“I’m told by the Chief Executive of TMA that there was an injunction on the assembly on his predecessor that they shouldn’t come into the area when they did the markings on these properties so because of that fear and respect to the law, they’ve not been able to come back because when you see a TMA official hanging around to enforce it, it becomes a problem, but the question is the TMA lawyer, what was he doing?”
“If people are doing illegality, why do we sit down and allow an injunction to hold as of now? We should move towards it and take the injunction off, and be able to work and ensure the right things are done. Having seen this, we’ll hold a brief discussion, and maybe they can go back to the court to lift the injunction and make sure the right things are done.”
He continued: “We will ensure that we will protect the core areas. Because human beings, when you give them one, they will go five, ten and by the time you realise, it’s becoming a problem.”
“But they have forgotten that what they are doing, they are creating serious problems for people within their homes. So this is something that we have to sanitise to make sure everyone is free. Very soon, the rains will be setting in, what do we do? They have been blaming the government that we are ineffective and not performing.
“So clearly, the REGSEC members have come on the ground. Me being a new person, I need to see everything for myself and make sure the right things are done. I am a man of my word, so leave that for me. I don’t take a single decision, it’s a collective decision. So when we get there, we will assess the situation and see how best we will go about it.”
