Two people were reported to have undergone treatment at separate hospitals due to trees falling on them during these incidents.

Chief Forecaster at the Meteorological Agency, Mr. Raphael Boakye, said we have to expect of these incidents.

He explained on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM that the heavy rains are expected to travel through to June.

He said the heat waves experienced recently will contribute to the thunderstorms.

“The heat we experienced recently will contribute to the thunderstorms. We are expecting more rain until the end of June. However, starting in July, we will see a reduction in thunderstorms. But let me stress that between now and June, we will continue to witness thunderstorms.”.

He advised farmers to take advantage of the period and make use of the rains so they would have a bountiful harvest.

To the general public, he advised them to stay away from seeking refuge under trees when it is raining.

He said those types of rains come with strong winds, which can uproot trees and pull down structures.

“To those who live in flood-prone areas, I will encourage them to take caution and relocate. We have to dissilt our clogged drains to prevent flooding. Contractors who are constructing drains should engage with us so we will know the areas where these drains are being constructed, so you know the volume and frequency of the rains and the direction of the wind that could push water into the drains, so they will know how large to construct the drains. Usually, the contractors don’t engage us and only construct shallow drains, which later lead to flooding.”

He emphasized the importance of responsible driving and safe driving on roads to prevent accidents.

“Drivers should also be guided and avoid indiscipline on our roads. They should be mindful of the foggy weather, especially at dawn, and the slippery roads during this period in order to prevent road crashes. Ghanaians should also remain updated on weather forecasts from our agency to help them plan their lives during the period.”
