The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has promised to pay allowances to chiefs who would play an active role in Ghana’s governance system.
The Vice President says a new NP government under his leadership will pay allowances to chiefs.
He noted that his manifesto committee will come out with a policy for chiefs to be paid an allowance they can live on to enable them to discharge their duties effectively.
He made the pledge when he paid a courtesy call on the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs as part of the second phase of his “Bold Solutions Campaign Tour.”
He also advocated for the review of the Chieftaincy Act to involve chiefs in the governance system of Ghana.
He argued that it is wrong for chiefs to be sidelined in the governance structure of the country and that it is time to review that arrangement that has persisted since the country gained independence from colonial rule.
“The major policy I want to bring is that if you look at the trend since independence, it looks as if Nananom has been sidelined in the governance of the country, and it is a problem. So I want us to review Section 63(d) of the Chieftaincy Act to give more powers to the Chiefs so that Chiefs can help the government in the governance of the country. Even managing your areas becomes difficult without the powers. So we will change the law to give you more powers,” the NPP 2024 presidential candidate said.
“The Manifesto Committee is coming with a recommendation that will soon be unveiled. We will pay the chiefs’ living allowances so they can live on them because we want you to have the resources with which you can work,” he added.
