Justice Siaw Mandela, a political expert, wonders why Electoral Commissioner Mrs. Jean Mensa and her deputies will make minor mistakes when organising registration procedures throughout the country.
He claimed that given her experience observing and monitoring elections and electoral-related activities prior to her appointment, Jean Mensa should have been better at her job.
According to him, this current EC has not been effective in organising registration exercises for some time now.
He stated that despite concerns aired and proposals made, the EC has not demonstrated a commitment to enhancing its work.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he opined that it makes no sense for the EC to organise its registration exercise in a few registration centres when the population keeps increasing.
He explained that when you get people overcrowded at some registration centres, it will definitely create problems.
He literally declared that when you overcrowd a location with angels, you will certainly find the devil there.
He said if not for concerns raised by some individuals and CSOs, the EC would have organised the limited registration exercise in only their district offices.
“Is Jean Mensa not aware that there are difficult-to-reach registration centres and would want people to complain and demand more centres before they expand? This is why people are accusing the EC of having an agenda. The number of registration centres is small and will cause challenges. It is prudent to increase the number of registration centres to help reduce overcrowding.
The increase in the facilitation of minors to register is because of some of these reasons. If the EC had increased the registration centres and allowed people to register at locations closer to them, it would have helped reduce the registration of minors.”
He added that Jean Mensa and her deputies, including Dr. Bossman Asare, are behaving as if they were brought from space into the country to work at the EC.
He emphasised the need for the EC to increase the registration centres to reduce the pressure and overcrowding in some of the registration centres.
He said the registration, which has been limited to a few centres, is not effective and could deprive eligible persons of the right to register to vote on December 7, 2024.
He also questioned if the EC will be able to compensate those they deprived of registration due to its ineffectiveness.
The analyst was, however, quick to admonish persons participating in the registration to exercise patience and allow the processes to flow in response to the challenges.
