Buaben Asamoa, a campaign team member for Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change (M4C), claims Ghana is in major economic upheaval because his former political party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has exacerbated the country’s already vulnerable situation.
The private legal practitioner noted that the NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) lack what it takes to make an economy function.
He believes Ghana is in a state of retrogression, and without proper care, the country may face a dire future.
He lamented that the two political parties have only managed to send Ghana to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) due to their incompetence.
The legacy of these two parties is to always send us to the IMF and also plunge the country into a power crisis, aka ‘dumsor’.
The economy’s state has remained unchanged due to our overreliance on cocoa and gold, which have depreciated over the years.
Buaben Asamoa claimed that because these two leaders and their successors lack innovative ideas to restructure the economy, “they have overtaxed Ghanaians, which is also limited to the ports, making it a dire situation, especially for the survival of businesses.” Businesses have suffered as a result of the cedis’ continued depreciation as we rely on imports. Business owners are driven to acquire the dollar at any price because without it, their companies cannot survive.
“We need to change the face of our economy, moving it from taxation to production. The production will require that we expand and add value to our raw materials.”
He touted Alan Kyerematen as the only personality with the technical knowledge and skills to provide this change.
“Alan has the track record. He has the capacity to do that. He has done it before. He was the one who advised Kufour to roll out the President’s Special Initiative after he had declared Ghana a Highly Indebted Poor Country (HIPC). He told Kufour that he would leave a poor legacy if he did not initiate this policy. That was why they initiated the policy. They focused on cassava, salt, textiles, and palm kennels. That was how we saw the establishment of a starch factory. Guinness Ghana Limited and Swiss Nestle bought from the starch factory because of its high quality. Despite previously buying from Thailand, they stopped and started buying from us. However, we could not expand the factory due to politics. The NDC wanted to sell the factory to their cronies, and so the issue is currently being dragged in court.”
The expansion and construction of the starch factory could potentially generate Ghc10 billion for Ghana.
He also indicated that salt, textiles, and palm kennels all have the potential to generate revenue for the country if we do what is right.
He appealed to Ghanaians to vote massively for Alan Kyerematen because he is the only one with the needed competence to help the country progress.
