Political leaders and other stakeholders in the country must pledge to ensure violence-free elections this year, the Ghana Red Cross Society has said.
According to society, we must avoid any form of activity that can undermine the peace, stability, and security of the country.
Public Relations Officer Samuel Adobah, who made the appeal, said the stakes are high in this year’s election, but stakeholders must commit to peace and avoid all forms of violence.
He said on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM that the process should also be credible, adding that we need the collective responsibility of all stakeholders.
He noted that the election is also crucial, especially when Ghanaians are complaining of economic hardship, but stressed that we do not need to engage in activities that will threaten the peace and stability of Ghana.
He said people should not be maimed or injured because other people want to be in power.
“This is an election year; this is a period when Ghanaians would be going to vote, and at the same time, this is a period when Ghanaians are complaining of economic hardship. We need to ensure that the electoral processes are organised in a free, fair, and transparent manner. We do not want a situation where the processes would be marred with violence and the Red Cross would be called to intervene.”
He also advised Ghanaians to stay safe, as we are in the rainy season.
“Also, while we are in the rainy season, we encourage the people to keep safe and avoid engaging in activities that could put them in danger. We also ask the media to always give us the opportunity to educate Ghanaians. They do not need to wait until the annual event to contact us. We are appealing to them to provide us opportunities on a regular basis,” he added.
The Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) is a national humanitarian organisation in Ghana and also a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which is the world’s largest humanitarian network.
The organisation’s mission is to prevent and alleviate human suffering, protect life and health, and promote human dignity during times of emergencies and disasters.
