The limited registration exercise is a civic activity; let’s avoid violent incidents – NDC running mate

May 13, 2024
Jane-Naana-Opoku-Agyemang

Running mate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has expressed worry over reported cases of violence at some registration centres in the ongoing limited registration exercise.

According to her, the registration is a civic exercise, and stakeholders ought to ensure that the exercise is organised in a civic manner devoid of any form of violence.

She made the remarks when she visited the limited voter registration exercise centre at the EC’s district office in Cape Coast.

The former education minister stated that the “Central Region is a peaceful region, and we don’t want the ongoing exercise to tarnish the image of the region; therefore, there’s a need for all the political parties to work together to ensure the exercise ends successfully.

“I have not witnessed any incidents so far. But we have heard of some reported incidents, which are not the best. We do not have to entertain these incidents. This is a civic exercise, and we should be responsible and allow the process to be organised in a civic manner.”

Meanwhile, she has reiterated the need for the Electoral Commission to consider her appeal for the exercise to be extended.

The ongoing process has been disrupted and faced numerous challenges.

She explained that several individuals who were eligible to register could not do so when the exercise started due to the technical challenges the EC encountered.

In view of this, she has stressed that “we have to extend the duration of the exercise. I was the one who proposed for the exercise to be extended. This will allow all those who could not register to do so. The challenges the EC encountered will have an impact on the exercise. So it would be prudent for them to extend the days allocated for the ongoing exercise so all eligible voters who have not registered will do so.”

She was in the company of the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast South Constituency, Hon. Kweku Ricketts Hagan, and Cape Coast North Constituency MP, Hon Kwamena Mintah Nyankor.
