The Sefwi Wiawso Anglican Diocese Bishop, Right Rev. Kwame Kyem Ampomah, has urged politicians to stop busing and assisting minors to register in the ongoing limited registration exercise.
The man of God said the registration of minors and foreigners is a criminal offence and will undermine the integrity of the register.
He asserted that the chaos and violence recorded at some of the registration centres were caused by the two major political parties, the NDC and the NPP.
In an interview with the media, Right Rev. Kwame Kyem Ampomah stated that “the influence of the politicians in the ongoing exercise is causing a whole lot of havoc”.
He advised parents not to allow politicians to jeopardise the future of their children by approving their registration when they have not turned 18 years old.
He said that without the approval of the parents, the political parties cannot register the children.
“My caution to parents is that it is a criminal offence for minors to register to vote. It has several implications for the children in the future. If you allow your underaged children to register for the sake of politics, it will have a have a negative impact on them. This will go into their records, and in the future, when they go in search of jobs, it will affect them. At that point, the age will be in contention, and that can deprive them of several opportunities.
We should not allow politicians to manipulate and influence us with money so our children will register for their selfish political interests. Protect your children and advise them to stay away from these criminal activities. We need to stop it because it is a threat to our democracy and a credible register,” he stressed.
To the political parties, he said, “I am appealing to the NPP and NDC to stop creating chaos in the ongoing limited registration exercise. They should stop busing foreigners, minors, and non-residents to the registration centres. These are some of the issues creating the violence recorded in some of the centres. They should allow the EC to conduct the exercise in a peaceful manner.”.
