The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has condemned the scuffle that took place at the Tema port.
The incident, which occurred on May 13, 2024, was between the authority’s security personnel and officers from the Ghana Immigration Service.
A statement issued by the GPHA said it prioritises the “safety and security of all stakeholders and condemns the behaviour displayed by both parties involved.”
A clash occurred when GPHA security members entered the GIS office at Meridian Port Services (MPS) to apprehend two officers after a disagreement during routine vessel checks on the MSC DYMPHNA at Tema Port.
.The dispute arose when GPHA security personnel demanded the search of immigration officers after their inspection duties.
A GIS inspector argued that body searches of officers, especially male ones, were not allowed.
The GPHA, in its statement, noted that the push against being searched contravenes the Standard Operating Procedures established by the International Ships and Port Facility Security (ISIPS).
It described the incident as unfortunate saying “that it could have been handled more effectively to prevent escalation.”
The GPHA further disclosed that it has taken responsibility and all those involved have been reprimanded.
