The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says although the Electoral Commission (EC) rectified errors in the dually submitted voter registration figures, the corrected errors were riddled with errors.
The EC a few days ago corrected errors in its publication of the daily voter registration figures in the ongoing limited registration exercise.
A press release by the electoral body admitted that it had made mistakes in the total registered figures stated for days two and three, as well as the day three figure for the Upper East region, which was repeated for day four.
However, the EC clarified that the regional figures were accurate, and the total number of registered voters at the end of the four-day period remained at 143,014.
But the NDC has disagreed, stating categorically that the corrected figures by the EC were also error-ridden.
The General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, said this at a press conference by the party on Thursday, May 16, 2024.
He went on to say that, while the EC accepted inaccuracies in some of the statistics captured, such as those registered in specific locations, the revised figures still contained errors.
He said on May 12, the EC admitted to the errors and claimed that the total number of registered voters remains unchanged despite the total figures over the four days.
He described this as transpositional rigging, which is being deployed by the EC to manipulate the figures.
“It will astonish you, ladies and gentlemen, to learn that even their revised figures are still riddled with errors and need further corrections. For instance, in the Oti region, day two’s figure of 578 was erroniously swapped with day three’s figure of 1,515. If these figures are realigned correctly, day two’s national total should be 18,330 and not 19,267. Day three’s total should be 49,553 and not 48,616. Similarly, the day three figure for Bono East, as stated in their corrected data, is 771, but this is totally wrong. Bono East recorded 2,252 per our data. This figure will affect the total registered voters of 5,118 for Bono East for the four days as stated by the EC.
Indeed, the total should rather be 6,599, thereby leading to a grand total of 144,495 and not 143,014 as put out by Dr. Bossman Asare in his press conference on May 12, 2024.”
He questioned why the EC had been reduced to an error commission and asked it to treat the exercise with extreme seriousness.
He advised the EC to conduct a thorough review of all numbers and make any necessary changes.
The 21-day registration exercise is exoected to end on May 27, 2024, with an expected addition of 623,000 first-time voters to the voter register.
