The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has alleged that the EC registration officials, in collusion with the NPP and state officials, are misusing the Ghana card in the ongoing registration exercise.
The General Secretary of the party, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, who made the allegation, said this was part of the election rigging mechanism deployed by the EC in collaboration with the government.
He cited an example at the Pusiga registration centre where one Muhazu Al Hassan used a single Ghana card to register 20 different applicants.
Upon discovery, the police were immediately informed, and the individual was arrested. Although he has been granted bail pending further investigation, this incident raises significant concerns, he said.
He stated that the government, through the NPP, is providing Ghana cards to minors to ease their registration in the ongoing registration process.
This, he stressed, represents a systemic manipulation of our electoral processes.
He further claimed that the EC failed to confront the National Identification Authority for distributing Ghana cards to minors and modifying their ages, while investing $54 million to protect biometric capabilities.
He also asked why the EC has not integrated its database with the NIA’s to instantly verify the ages of new voters.
Fifi Kwetey quizzed: “What purpose does the NIA serve as envisioned by former President John Dramani Mahama if critical institutions like the EC cannot rely on it for essential verification and authentication during crucial national activities?
The party, he added, has taken decisive action in directing its agents at all registration centres to use the party’s sophisticated age detection mechanism to identify and challenge any suspicious and underage registrants.
This proactive measure, he said, is crucial to preserving the integrity of our electoral system and ensuring that every vote cast is legitimate and reflective of the genuine will of the Ghanaian people.
He added that the NDC remains committed to safeguarding Ghana’s democracy against all forms of electoral malpractice.
“We are fully prepared to safeguard the sanctity of the coming elections. We expect the EC to firmly renounce any intention, if it exists, to collude with the failed NPP to rig the elections. Any such attempt would be decisively thwarted. The EC must commit to conducting free, transparent, unbiased, and credible elections.”
The NDC voiced concerns over what it described as dubious behaviour on the part of the Electoral Commission (EC).
It says that if left unchecked, the EC will destabilise this country.
The party has therefore cautioned the EC to desist from any attempt to rig the elections in favour of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), if there is any.
He advised the EC to focus its attention on organising free, fair, transparent, and credible elections.
At a news conference on Thursday, May 16, 2024, General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey made it clear that the electoral body would not be allowed to manipulate the system or rig the people’s will in favour of the failed government.
He accused the body of deliberately misrepresenting figures in the ongoing limited registration exercise as part of a grand scheme to rig the 2024 elections in favour of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“Such dubious behaviour from the EC could destabilise our democracy if left unchecked. Imagine the potential chaos on December 7, 2024. If the EC continues to release the error-ridden figures, what will be the security implications for their actions? If this is their dress rehearsal for the upcoming elections, then they must be told that they need to reconsider their actions. The EC might be testing the waters with their rigging strategy by deliberately misrepresenting and miscalculating registration figures, but our prompt detection and exposure of these egregious errors should serve as a clear warning to the EC about the vigilance of the NDC.
