The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has advised the Ghanaian public to exercise caution during the rainy season and to keep watchful to avoid outbreaks.
The service said, contrary to the views people have, fire outbreaks can be triggered during this rainy season, hence the need for the public to remain cautious.
DO1 Alex King Nartey, of the Public Relations Department, explained that fire outbreaks can still be recorded this season, especially electrical-related fires.
He advised that it would be best for people to switch off their electrical gadgets during a heavy downpour since power fluctuations can cause an outbreak.
“We therefore advise the Ghanaian public to remain vigilant. During a downpour, you have to switch off your gadgets since a power fluctuation can cause an outbreak to occur.
Contrary to what people believe, whenever rains start, we record fire outbreaks, especially electrical fires. So we are encouraging people to switch off their electrical gadgets when it is raining. Sometimes the rains come along with power fluctuations and outages.
These tnings could cause outbreaks, thus it is best to turn off their equipment. Second, heavy rains cause trees and billboards to fall, as we have seen in the previous two weeks near the airport.”
He also cautioned people not to stand under trees, billboards, or electric poles because heavy rains can cause them to fall and cause damage.
“Similarly, electrical poles can be pulled down, and if there is power in the wires and they come into contact with water, electrocution can occur.
That is why it is critical to seek out safe spots and wait till the rains stop. We also warn drivers to avoid driving near trees and billboards, and to park in low level areas to avoid having their vehicles washed away by floodwaters.”
He said this during an interview with Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM.
